10 reasons to create a blog if you are a student

I started my first marathon blog (in German) when I was 25. That was the time when I started as a marathoner, finishing my first race in 3:12:24. It was in 2005 when I was already doing my PhD in Switzerland with consulting projects for companies. I had my 10-11 hours of work every day and there was little time left for other things. There were always evenings and weekends when I would take the laptop and write posts about my new passion (as long as my girlfriend didn’t tell me off for spending all day in front of the laptop).

I wish I had discovered the world of blogging earlier, for example during my studies. I have never had as much free time as I did then. It would have been the ideal time to start blogging. I dedicate this post to all students who are lucky enough (and maybe not 100% aware of it) to be studying and have a lot of free time. Maybe this post will inspire you to create your own blog. I have 20 minutes left to finish while the little one is sleeping so I’m going to limit myself to 10 reasons to do it.

1. Generate monthly income: it’s difficult to get rich with a blog but with dedication, desire and effort you can generate between 100-1,000 Euros each month. This extra income may now help you find a job with something you don’t really like. It must also be said that it can’t be achieved overnight. You have to invest at least 1 year before seeing the first results.

It should not be a bad thing when you have finished your degree to not have to start sending your CV but to choose between the different job offers that have come to you.

8. Negotiate a higher salary: the contacts you have obtained through the blog can be a justification for negotiating a higher salary. The argument will only be valid if they can really be activated because then the company will see a real value and will be willing to pay for it.

9. Recycle university work: during university you often create a lot of content that is then never used. On the Internet, content is king. Perhaps it makes sense to publish parts of your work as blog posts.

10. Start your own business: a blog can be the first step to start your own business. There is a very entrepreneurial atmosphere in the blogosphere. If you let yourself get caught up in it, you have access to a wide network of contacts that can help you take your first steps as an entrepreneur.
